Etihad and the A380

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways is unlikely to see the return of its once 10-strong Airbus A380 fleet.

It will mean the end of the only true private suite 'The Residence' on a scheduled airline service. Designed for up to two guests, the luxury three-room apartment featured an en-suite shower room, private bedroom and separate living area.

In an interview with The National, the local English language newspaper, Etihad chief executive Tony Douglas said that the aircraft in the current world was no longer profitable to operate.

“We have now taken the strategic decision to park the A380s, I am sure it is very likely that we will not see them operating with Etihad again,” Douglas explained.

Etihad joins a list of airlines who will not return grounded aircraft into service including Air France, Lufthansa and Qantas.  There is no decision yet by British Airways.

Cirium Data (as of 16 March) shows Emirates, the largest operator of the plane, with 15 in service, while China Southern Airlines, with five, and Korean Air, with one, are the only other airlines currently using the aircraft – 240 have been delivered.
