Londonderry air route boost

The City of Derry’s air route to London has been guaranteed for another two years with the announcement of a £4.3m funding arrangement from Westminster.

Currently flying to Stansted the service operates 13 times weekly, operated by Loganair, with an Embraer 145 jet.  Glasgow will resume on 5 April four times weekly and Liverpool, dropped by Ryanair, will commence 24 May, also initially four times per week.  Both destinations are expected to be daily by the end of June.

Derry Airport is one of three gateways into Northern Ireland, the others being Belfast International, with a runway capable of taking wide-bodied aircraft, and Belfast City, rather like Derry, restricted to Airbus A320 series and Boeing 737s.  Located on the south bank of Lough Foyle, the airport is 8 miles from the city centre and 10 miles to the border with the Irish Republic.
