Berlin closes

Formerly Schönefeld Airport, Berlin (BER) Terminal 5, is to close from 23 February.

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg the operator of the terminal, once the gateway to the former German Democratic Republic, says that it is a temporary measure “available if the need arises”.

With the brand-new Terminal 1 successfully launched, and Berlin airports passenger numbers dramatically down due to the pandemic, the chances of the old building opening again seems remote.  It does have its own railway station.

The airport authority says that the new, fully completed, and operational Terminal 2 will also not be put into operation for the time being.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport ‘Willy Brandt’ International Airport (T1) officially opened, low key due to the pandemic, on Saturday 31 October 2020, nine years late and at a cost of €5.4bn as against the original estimate of €2bn.  EasyJet flew the first departure, to Gatwick, at 06:45 the following morning.  Tegel Airport, a former French Air Force base and the German capital’s previous major airport, closed on 8 November 2020.
