A Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 (PK-CLC) crashed in the sea shortly after take-off Saturday (9 January) with the loss of all 62 people on board. At the time of writing the cause is not known but the "black box" has been recovered.
Sriwijaya Air was established in 2003 and operates mainly domestic services with a fleet of 18 Boeing 737 series aircraft. Whilst its safety record is not impeccable it has only been involved with minor incidents over the years.
