SpiceJet confirms Heathrow

Low-cost Indian airline SpiceJet has finally confirmed Friday 4 December for the introduction of a weekly service from Delhi to Heathrow.

The following day Mumbai begins, also weekly (see BTN 10 August).

It is expected to use a two-class Airbus A330 chartered from Portuguese specialist carrier H-Fly and use T2 for the time being.

Now again owned by founder Ajay Singh, the airline made its maiden flight in May 2005 and at the outbreak of the pandemic operated 60 Boeing 737-800s and 30 DHC Q400s.  It has 13 Boeing MAX grounded and a further 192 on order.

It is the second largest airline in India by number of domestic passengers and at the start of the year operated 630 daily flights to 64 destinations, including 54 Indian and 15 international destinations from its hubs at Delhi and Hyderabad.

With Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic well established on the routes and Vistara expected to be daily from Heathrow to Delhi (see BTN 31 August) by that time there might be over capacity, although at this time SpiceJet is only weekly.
