Airports look forward

In spite of the terrible problems they are faced with due to the Covid-19 pandemic both Gatwick and Heathrow airports are looking to the future.

Last week Gatwick Airport published its half year results which despite an encouraging start saw passenger numbers fall by 66% due to the impact of Covid-19. The airport has remained open throughout the pandemic, but there was a 61.3% fall in revenue and a £321m loss.  As CEO Stewart Wingate points out in ON THE SOAPBOX the airport is pushing ahead with plans to turn the northern (emergency) runway into a fully operational facility.

On Wednesday/Thursday Heathrow goes before the Supreme Court in a bid to overturn a February ruling which said the Government's airports policy was unlawful as it failed to take into account climate change commitments.  Airport CEO John Holland-Kaye has accepted that the third runway will not be needed for some time but is clearly looking to the future when international travel will return to the norms of the last decade.
