In spite of very gloomy predictions by individual airport operators London still substantially leads in terms of passenger throughput, but based on the 2019 figures published by ACI Europe. Overall, the European numbers for 2020 are likely to be down by 90% at the end of the year. London will take the heaviest hit, the airports collectively stating that the lack of leadership from Government was not helping with the dramatic loss. Frankfurt is now overall ahead of Heathrow.
London (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City and Southend) lead for 2019 with a total throughput of 179m passengers.
The two Paris airports (Charles de Gaulle and Orly) were next with 107m.
Very close together were Amsterdam (71m) and Frankfurt (70m), followed by Madrid with 61m, and 52m for Barcelona, the same for the new Istanbul Airport.
