Teesside lands at Heathrow

In early July Eastern Airways, in partnership with local council-owned Teesside International Airport, launched flights to London City Airport.

With the pandemic, slots at airports have become easier to obtain, even if only on a temporary basis, even at Heathrow.

The London swap was just too tempting.

Last Monday Eastern Airways introduced what is initially a daily service into Heathrow T2. It uses a 76-seat Embraer 170 in 2+2 configuration offering a generous seat pitch and large overhead lockers plus wash rooms at both ends of the cabin. There is no service on board.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “The importance and value of hub connectivity to the UK’s regions is critical to the Government’s levelling up agenda. If regions cannot connect to global trade, productivity and skills they will instead experience higher unemployment, skills shortages and an investment decline.”

With no huge call on the facilities Eastern have secured an airbridge gate at T2 eliminating the need for an apron bus.  The short take-off Embraer is very runway efficient at Heathrow, flight time to Teesside just 35min.  See also in this issue. Heathrow some thoughts.
