Gibraltar Airport is notorious for its missed approaches and landing cancellations due to high winds.

EasyJet missed a landing and had to turn away.

For the full planeload waiting to go home there was a dilemma. 

All the beds in the Crown Colony were taken, the normal alternative accommodation in La Linea just across the border in Spain.  Eighty passengers chose to cross over rather than night-stop in the terminal.  They are now taking an extra 14 days holiday in quarantine.

GIB options for diversions during COVID 19 are very limited . Portugal is a corridor but not practical for land transport as you must go via Spanish roads . Spain is 14 days quarantine and Seamen positioning to GIB don’t hold documents allowing access into Spain. France is quarantine. . Only resource left is to return to UK base which means carrying sufficient fuel from point of departure , diversion fuel and ultimately return fuel which all affects the payload capability to uplift all passengers in the first place !!
