Cruise industry ‘sinking’

Royal Caribbean Group, which includes Royal Caribbean Cruise Line itself (RCCL), Celebrity and Azamara, plus in very recent times, Silversea, reported a net loss of $1.64bn for the second quarter of this year, a swing of more than $2bn from the profits it reported for the same period 2019 of $472m.

As with all cruise lines Royal Caribbean works very closely with the major international airlines, particularly in bringing Americans over for European cruises.  This market presently does not exist.  Social distancing is a problem yet to be tackled and also local quarantine rules.

Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise line by revenues and the second largest, behind Carnival Cruises, by passenger numbers. It sails the four largest passenger ships in the world and the brand typically would expect to handle 5m passengers a year.
