Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), close by the A1(M) and M18 in South Yorkshire, has been chosen by Wizz Air as its second British base by the UK-registered division of the Hungarian airline, quoted on the London Stock Exchange.
A modest beginning is planned with a single Airbus A320 from 22 October. Seven new destinations are intended through the winter period adding to the 10 already flown and originating in continental Europe.
Wizz Air’s first flight from DSA took off over 14 years ago, and since then Wizz has grown to be the airport’s largest carrier, with over 1 million annual passengers flying on the airline’s central and eastern European routes.
The airline’s new destinations include the cities of Alicante and Malaga (Spain), Larnaca (Cyprus), Faro (Portugal), Lublin (Poland), Kosice (Slovakia) and Suceava (Romania).
Owain Jones, Managing Director of Wizz Air UK, said: “The creation of our second base in the UK is a major milestone for Wizz Air UK, and testament to both our long-term commitment to serving the UK market and the strength of the Wizz Air business model, as we continue to expand our footprint during this challenging time for the industry.
