Quash Quarantine

A new lobby group called Quash Quarantine has been created representing over 500 companies involved in some way or another with the travel and hospitality industry.

It quickly commissioned a survey, by global consumer and social research company AudienceNet, carried out among 2,102 UK residents, statistically and demographically representative of the UK adult population, on 8 and 9 June 2020.

The results were uncompromising with the research indicating that the majority of the UK population believes Government quarantine measures will damage the UK economy.  Only 9% believe it will be unaffected. Just 15% think the new measures will work.

Of those questioned 38% believe that the Government should have conducted an economic impact assessment prior to introducing the measures, with an additional 25% assuming that they had. Yet the lack of economic research by the Government is a surprise bearing in mind there is also an absence of scientific evidence from SAGE, the Government’s own advisory body.

Paul Charles, a member of the Quash Quarantine group, claimed that the travel and hospitality sector has become a “political football” in the Government’s Brexit negotiations.  Writing for Travel Weekly UK he said: “Relations between the sector and the Westminster Government are at rock bottom.  There is deep mistrust of ministers who are hardly going out of their way to offer visibility as to when we can book a holiday bargain.”

According to the Office for National Statistics, in the two weeks to 30 May, only one person in a 1,000 had caught the virus. Enough said!
