Cycle lane measures

The Government announced last week new measures that are claimed to catch rogue drivers parking their cars or unloading lorries in cycle lanes.

The new rules will allow councils using CCTV to remotely monitor mandatory cycle lanes, which are marked by a single unbroken white line.  These become law on 22 June.

Councils will soon be able to use CCTV to catch rogue drivers parking their cars or unloading lorries in cycle lanes, in a move the Government claims will make cycling safer.

Cars which are stopped or parked on cycle lanes force cyclists back into the flow of traffic, a potentially dangerous manoeuvre.

Cycling Minister Chris Heaton-Harris said: “Across the country there has been a surge in the number of people dusting off their old bike from the back of the shed and cycling, or taking journeys on foot, to get from A to B.

“Giving local authorities more powers to stop cycle lanes from becoming blocked will make it safer for cyclists.

“This measure will help get more cyclists on the road and alleviate pressure on public transport infrastructure.”
