The future of Norwegian Air is hanging in the balance.Unlike with similar high-profile airlines, its founder, one time air force pilot Bjørn Kjos, stepped down in July 2019 and out of the limelight. Things were not brilliant then for the air carrier, but what has followed could never have been anticipated. A takeover by IAG fell apart but if Norwegian Air Shuttle (the full title) collapses it could still pick up the pieces.
At present the airline, and its various subsidiaries, operates 37 Boeing 787s and just over one hundred 737 variants with three MAX delivered and a backlog of 90. It employs 10,000 staff. With 10% of the passenger throughput it is the third largest operator at London’s Gatwick.
A shareholders meeting is scheduled for today (Monday 3 May).
At its height Norwegian was carrying 37m passengers a year. At present it is running just a skeleton service in Scandinavia.
