Virgin Atlantic (VS) Cargo has announced that it will operate over 90 cargo-only flights a week in May. The flights will enable key movement of prime freight and will also give the airline much needed custom. VS was averaging 13 cargo-only flights per week pre-COVID-19 but will now offer same day connections to New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tel Aviv and Johannesburg and a twice-weekly flight has been relaunched to Mumbai.
The airline will also operate freight flights from Dublin for the first time, enabling Ireland’s medical technology, electronics and other industries to achieve same day connections to New York JFK, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Tel Aviv and Johannesburg. Services will be operated using the airline’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft, which can carry up to 55 tonnes of cargo.
The Department of Health and Social Care and the NHS chartered VS to transport 150 tonnes of medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) into the UK equipment into throughout May, June and July.
