Sir Stirling Moss

Unquestionably the finest driver never to become World Motoring Champion Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90.

Amongst a host of achievements outstanding was the 1955 Mille Miglia with Motor Sport’s Denis Jenkinson calling out the pace notes.  Around Italy 1,000 miles of public roads, and the first ever Lotus Formula One win in Rob Walker's privately-entered car.

Moss raced from 1948 to 1962, winning 212 of the 529 races he entered, including 16 Formula One Grand Prix and drove 84 different makes of car over the course of his career.

He was a regular at Goodwood (and the Business Travel Awards) and was a true sporting personality throughout his life, with numerous motor sport and TV appearances. Stirling’s late younger sister Pat Moss was a very successful rally driver and married Swedish Erik Carlsson perhaps the finest rallyist of his generation.

A Mayfair resident for many years, convenient for the popular Steering Wheel Club in Shepherds Market, the Moss flat was full of mod cons from the era, including a lift, something he forgot about in March 2010 resulting in a nasty accident having fallen down the shaft.

“Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?” was a police joke from an earlier generation.  The genial Moss seemed to enjoy it.

...Apparently.... ...When he got there the 'Great Man' immediately wanted to meet up with all the other great drivers but he was stopped by a couple of 'Angels' dressed in blue on his way from the 'City Heaven'...the 'Cloud Port' VIP Platinum Lounge... ...It was reported they at first shouted..."Oi you Fangio"....Who do you think you are... ...then he wound the window down and said...'Sterling Moss'.....So,From all of us in the Grandstand...RIP Son!
