Gatwick and Munich airports

Gatwick Airport will consolidate operations into the South Terminal from 1 April and limit runway opening hours to protect staff, passengers and the business from the impact of COVID-19.

The airport’s single runway will be in use between 14:00 and 22:00 for scheduled flights, and remains available for emergency landings and diversions only outside these hours.  Measures are to be in place from 1 April for one month, with the situation kept under regular review.

Stewart Wingate, chief executive, Gatwick Airport, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff for their continuing hard work through this difficult time and to reassure them that we are taking these difficult decisions now, so that we are in a position to recover quickly and get back to generating jobs and economic benefits for the region and wider economy well into the future.

Munich is probably typical of other major international airports.  The number of take-offs and landings declined steadily in March and last week had plummeted to less than 10% of the number counted in the corresponding week in 2019.  Meanwhile, passenger traffic is now at just 5% of last year's level.
