Crossrail further delay

The Elizabeth Line, previously Crossrail, is likely to be further delayed with all but safety site work being suspended due to COVID-19.

Mike Brown MVO, London’s Transport Commissioner, said: “The Government and the Mayor have given clear instructions to stay safe and to stop travelling in all cases other than critical workers making absolutely essential journeys.

“In line with this, TfL and Crossrail will be bringing all project sites to a temporary Safe Stop unless they need to continue for operational safety reasons. This means that work on all such projects will be temporarily suspended as soon as it is safe to do so. Essential maintenance of the transport network will of course continue.

Originally planned to open in 2018 previous announcements suggested that the central section services would commence in summer 2021.  This is now very unlikely but the delay might give planners the time to reconsider a station for Silvertown – London City Airport (LCY), the Crossrail completion now more in line time with the expected opening of the much larger terminal.  At LCY the parallel taxiway in now largely structurally complete and may well be operational when things return to normal.
