Private flights - a balance

The loss of scheduled flights from the main airports has had an effect when it comes to business jet flying, but it is not completely an upward trend, as Private Fly chief executive Adam Twidell explains.

Twidell, an ex-RAF and NetJets pilot, founded Private Fly in 2008, together with wife Carol Cork. It is now part of the Directional Aviation OneSky group, which includes Skyjet, Sentient Jet and Flexjet and is based in Cleveland in the US.

Twidell said: “The coronavirus outbreak has contributed to a 30% increase in inquiries at PrivateFly year-on-year. But as we’re also seeing a number of clients cancelling or postponing trips globally, this situation is not driving a significant upward trend in overall booked flights.

"Many of the inquiries we're getting are from people very concerned to get their families back together as soon as possible, given how rapidly the situation is developing.

"For example, one client is flying his daughter home to the US from university in France, and several of her fellow students who are also US citizens are sharing the flight back with her. The US travel ban has also seen a rise in those looking to fly at short notice back to the US before the European travel limitations take effect.
