Delta fights back with Seattle expansion

A new route between Seattle and Heathrow is being launched by Delta Air Lines next year as the carrier expands its hub at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in response to increased competition from American Airlines.

It follows American and Seattle-based Alaska Airlines getting together to form what they called “a new US West Coast international alliance” (BTN 17 February), with American also planning a new service to Heathrow in 2021.

Delta’s fight-back includes a three-times-daily service from 8 June between Seattle to Dallas/Fort Worth, which is American’s home hub, and a daily service to Columbus, Ohio, with both routes operated by the Airbus A220.

Delta, a member of the SkyTeam alliance, is also adding second daily flights between Seattle and Austin, also using the A220, and Orlando, with the Boeing B737-900.

Delta’s latest additions follow a previously announced new service to Tampa from Seattle from this month and second daily services to both Kansas City and Washington Dulles from this summer.

In all, Delta will have 190 daily departures to 56 destinations from Seattle this summer, with Dallas marking the airline’s second destination in Texas after Austin.

The new non-stop route to Heathrow next year will make the London airport Delta’s 10th international destination from Seattle.
