Gatwick lands Faroe Islands link

Faroese national carrier Atlantic Airways is launching a new summer service by Airbus A320 between Gatwick and Vágar Airport in the Faroe Islands from 23 June, the first direct flight from London since 2014 when the airline flew from Stansted.

The new weekly Tuesday route will offer a shorter journey time to the Faroes of 2hr 10min, as well as a greener alternative, saving on the emissions of the additional take-off and landing in Copenhagen of connecting flights.

The new schedule will run until 11 August and will be in addition to the current daily Atlantic Airways' flights to the Faroes via Denmark and twice-weekly direct Edinburgh flights.

Atlantic CEO Jóhanna á Bergi said: “Having a direct flight from London again not only makes our islands more accessible to travellers in and around London but is great news for those using Gatwick as a hub from other world destinations.”

Known for the KOKS restaurant, which has two Michelin stars, the Faroes will see the opening of the independent Hotel Brandan in the capital, Tórshavn, this spring and its first international hotel brand, Hilton Garden Inn, both with four stars, in July.

Other locally-managed hotels, B&B accommodation run by locals and home-stays, are also available for visitors interested in the culture of the remote island nation, part of the kingdom of Denmark.
