Lufthansa’s newest route to Germany took off last week with a six-times-weekly Sunday-Friday non-stop service between Newcastle and Munich, with more than 130 onward connections throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia Pacific.
Passengers travelling from Newcastle were welcomed at check-in at Newcastle Airport with an inaugural celebration to mark the official launch of the new route, which operates into T2 at Munich International Airport.
It is Lufthansa’s first Munich service from Newcastle, the airline’s seventh destination in the UK and complements Eurowings’ direct flight to Dusseldorf, strengthening the North East’s accessibility for business travellers to Europe and beyond.
Lufthansa Group UK, Ireland and Iceland senior sales director Andreas Köster said: “We are delighted to offer passengers in the North East an additional and convenient new route into Germany.
“We pride ourselves on being a premium, full-service, 5-star airline and connecting our passengers to one of our two major hubs and our world-wide network.”
Newcastle Airport chief executive Nick Jones, added: “We are delighted to welcome a globally-renowned, 5-star airline. Watching the first flight take to the skies was a proud moment for the Airport and an important milestone for the region.”
