An “outstanding” performance last month and nearly 15,000 passengers carried on the Antwerp – London City route after four months of flying have put Air Antwerp on track for a successful 2020, the airline said last week.
The new-born regional carrier took off on the route for the first time last September using a 50-seat Fokker 50 and aiming for 50,000 passengers a year. CEO Johan Maertens said results so far were “fully in line” with this forecast.
He added: “The link with London City Airport is by far the most important business route from Antwerp Airport. In December, we carried 4,179 passengers, which is 90 more than the previous record set by our predecessor VLM.
“That is a great achievement, especially as we offered 700 seats fewer last month than VLM in previous years, with one of the reasons for this success being the excellent co-operation with our codeshare partner KLM.”
Maertens said of 500-plus flights operated so far, only one had to be cancelled due to a technical problem while tests by journalists had also shown Air Antwerp services were by far the best way to travel between Antwerp and London.
