ICAO celebrates and looks ahead

The 75th anniversary of the Chicago Convention, which established the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a specialised agency of the United Nations charged with coordinating and regulating international air travel, was celebrated last week.

International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated on 7 December to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by the organisation, which takes care of international standards for aviation safety.

The occasion was marked by a joint statement by ICAO council president Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu and secretary general Fang Liu noting the theme for International Civil Aviation Day in 2019 of “75 Years of Connecting the World”.

This was selected, the statement said, to draw attention to the fact safe, secure and rapid connectivity was the core capability of aviation’s worldwide network, from which all other international aviation benefits – commercial, cultural or personal – derive.

ICAO said it chose to focus the sector’s attention during the anniversary on the future of flight rather than its past, acknowledging the rapidly-expanding capacity of “incredible” new aircraft to fulfil exciting new services and roles for civil societies.

The statement added: “It will be by leveraging its historic levels of consensus and cooperation … realised through ICAO over the past 75 years, that the aviation community will realise an even brighter and more sustainable new future for air transport.”
