All went well and the A1081 New Airport Way linking Luton Airport and the M1 re-opened last night 9hr ahead of schedule after being closed for the weekend. Diversions have been lifted. It is the main route into the airport.
The road was shut from 20:00 on Friday 29 November for a bridge installation, part of the DART transit project linking the airport terminal to Luton Parkway station. It is due to be completed by Spring 2021.
DART is a double-shuttle automated people-mover based on latest technology and design and can operate 24hr a day, seven days a week. The cable-driven system is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
Planning for the bridge introduction has taken many months, with the structure being put together by the side of the main dual carriageway road into the airport which would normally have a 40mph speed limit. Very precise engineering was required to fit the new overpass exactly into place.
