Second 'Quiet and Green' win for SAS

Introducing more modern and fuel-efficient aircraft to its fleet has earned Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) top spot for the second time this year in Heathrow’s ‘Fly Quiet and Green’ league identifying the best carriers using the airport based on noise and emissions.

Airport officials say the latest league table shows airlines are continuing to invest in the modernisation of their fleets and operational performance, with SAS setting an example by bringing in more Airbus A320neo variants.

Claimed to be the market’s most modern and fuel-efficient short-haul aircraft and less noisy, it now accounts for 80% of all SAS movements at Heathrow.

SAS head of sustainability Lars Andersen Resare said: “SAS wants to be at the forefront of the journey towards sustainable aviation, and it is encouraging to be recognised as the most environmentally friendly airline out of Heathrow.”

Oman Air has moved up the table from seventh place last quarter to second place this time thanks to operational reliability and the introduction of Dreamliners, while a notable mention goes to Iberia, which has doubled the number of A320neos being used at Heathrow.

The airport says it will now work closely with the airline to improve its track keeping and descent procedures into West London.

We do not recognise or accept the criticism of the Heathrow Fly Quiet and Green league table seen here. The calculations behind the league results are robust and transparent. Results are also shared with airlines prior to publication. We are delighted that the table continues to positively influence airline behaviour and has been successful in reducing local environmental impacts of flights in and out of Heathrow. We will continue to work with all our airlines to encourage and facilitate cleaner and quieter flights.

Sadly, Oman Air has been short-changed by Heathrow - it actually qualifies for the Number One position in the Fly Quiet & Green league table, if Heathrow's own rules at https://www.heathrowflyquietandgreen.com/how-we-calculate/ are correctly followed. Oman Air performed better than the airline that was wrongly awarded first place (SAS) in 4 of the 7 categories measured, including one of the highest-weighted (track-keeping), and its correctly-calculated aggregate score is some 60 points higher than SAS's. Congratulations to Oman Air !
