Balls backing for airport access plans

The Gatwick Transport Forum’s aim of creating an integrated regional transport system won the backing of former shadow chancellor Ed Balls when he gave the keynote speech at the group’s 2019 annual meeting last week.

Noting “airports are a cornerstone of our economy, contributing new jobs, business relationships and tourism”, he said he “fully supported” developing the means for passengers to arrive at and depart from such facilities as efficiently and easily as possible.

The audience heard how Gatwick now gets 44% of passengers and 43% of staff to the airport by public and other sustainable forms of transport as the forum pursued its target of delivering 48% of passengers by public transport by 2022.

Some 150 transport service providers and manufacturers, local authority transport officers and community representatives at the meeting heard updates on the M23 Smart Motorway upgrade, plans to redevelop Gatwick’s train station and initiatives to promote shared transport services and electric vehicles.

Head of real estate and surface transport Emma Rees said: “As an airport, we are determined to increase sustainable travel options by supporting transport initiatives like improving our bus facilities that help to improve the environment.”
