The history of airports policy in London will be under the microscope at the next Royal Aeronautical Society lecture, to be delivered on Tuesday week, 29 October, at the society’s headquarters at 4 Hamilton Place, London.
Lectures are free to attend for both members and non-members.
The talk is based on guest lecturer Paul Le Blond's book Inside London's Airports Policy: Indecision, Decision and Counter-Decision, published by ICE Publishing and covering the period from the mid-1970s to the present.
Based on extensive research from publications, academic papers, government files and interviews, the lecture will discuss the periods of incremental growth with new terminals at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted and the policy vacuum of the early 1990s.
Also included are the Heathrow Terminal 5 inquiry; long-term strategy as outlined in the 2003 White Paper; and the Airports Commission of 2012-2015 which led to the National Policy Statement of 2018.
Le Blond is a former BAA airport planner and consultant with more than 45 years’ experience in the air and rail transport industries.
His other jobs have included rail strategy director for Heathrow Express and director of strategy for Eurostar, after which he became an independent consultant. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
