United CRJ-550 cleared for take-off

The first batch of US domestic routes earmarked for service by the new Bombardier CRJ-550, the first 50-seater aircraft in the world designed with three classes, have been announced by launch customer United Airlines.

Tickets are now on sale for the flights, which initially will serve 15 cities from Chicago O’Hare including Cincinnati, Des Moines, Greensboro, St Louis, Richmond and Oklahoma City. Services begin next Sunday, 27 October.

The shortest route is to Madison, with a distance of 109 miles, and the longest is to Oklahoma City, with a distance of 693 miles. The average range is 401 miles.

Bombardier describes the CRJ-550 as a new CRJ Series aircraft model, with a type certificate based on the CRJ-700. The maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is decreased to 15,590kg and the maximum range is decreased to 1,447km.

United has ordered 50 CRJ-550 for routes to small cities with high numbers of business passengers. After the Chicago launch, the airline says it will grow the network to include New York Newark and Washington Dulles beginning next March.

The United CRJ-550 has 10 seats in Business Class, 20 in Economy Plus and 20 Economy Class. Wi-fi and USB charging ports are available throughout the aircraft.
