East London has welcomed its latest hotel with the opening of the Stratford, set in the bottom six floors of the new 42-storey Manhattan Loft Gardens skyscraper in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Conceived by property developer Harry Handelsman, the project is said to be designed to bring a new era of hotel living to London inspired by the glamour of New York's legendary long-stay hotels of the 1950s.
Highlights of the 145-room property include a “zen garden” with daily yoga, a lounge garden with fire pits, a bar and barbecues, and a wild meadow of herbs and flowers with restaurant seating.
Among other features is a cultural agenda of exclusive partnerships and events ranging from live music performances to fitness sessions including ConBody, the New York fitness craze where “ex-cons” lead prison-style workouts.
Dining options include two restaurants, the Allegra by Patrick Powell of Chiltern Firehouse on the seventh floor, and the ground-floor Stratford Brasserie by Ben Harrington, formerly of Soho House.
The hotel is accessible from national rail and DLR station Stratford International, a 6min journey from King's Cross St Pancras and a stone's throw from London City Airport.
