United goes Polaris

It was probably the airline PR coup of the year as last week United Airlines invited the travel press to see its much heralded new Polaris Business Class seats on a Boeing B767-300ER at Heathrow.

The visitors were able to take breakfast in the airline’s impressive landside arrivals lounge before boarding the aircraft, inspecting the interior then being served a typical in-flight meal by cabin staff, all London-based.

As United’s managing director sales for UK and Ireland Bob Schumacher said:  “It’s been a long time coming but well worth the wait.” There are 17 aircraft in the North Atlantic fleet. The refurbishment takes 18 working days and all five Heathrow – New York Newark services are now flown by the reworked planes.

BTN is planning for a full review at a later date.

Each of the 46 seats is a complete module with direct access to the aisle. The aircraft also features 22 Premium Plus seats in a 2+2+2 configuration, 47 in Economy Plus giving more legroom, and 52 in Economy.

Schumacher made the point the mid-price product was proving attractive for price conscious travellers. “We have seen a significant increase in customer demand for premium seats and we’re excited to be able to expand the number on all of our flights between Heathrow and our New York Newark hub," he added.
