Eco campaign on a roll

Boeing’s B787 Dreamliners and the Airbus A350 were singled for praise by Heathrow last week as results of the airport’s latest “Fly Quiet and Green” league table for April-June showed airlines taking further measures to protect the environment.

SAS took the top spot in the table for the second quarter of the year after it reduced early and late flights and improved track keeping, following Noise Preferential Route flight paths and using Continuous Descent Approach – a quieter landing method.

The table rates how the airport’s top 50 busiest airlines score for these factors and monitors emission-reducing fleet upgrades. Heathrow said Dreamliners and A350s were among the top environmental performers, helping airlines to rise in the rankings.

Qantas jumped 28 places in the league to sixth place, earning the title of most improved airline, after achieving 100% compliance for track keeping and running its schedule without late or early flights.

The latest results coincide with Heathrow’s 12-week expansion consultation, which details the tough measures the airport says it will be putting in place to reduce emissions and provide respite for local communities.

The consultation runs until 13 September, giving the public the opportunity to help shape the plans for the country’s largest privately-funded infrastructure project.
