Back in time at Jersey airshow

Channel Islands residents will be able to step back in time next month when British Airways celebrates its anniversary year with a nostalgic entry in the 2019 Jersey International Air Display on 12 September.

One of the airline’s heritage aircraft, an Airbus A319 in the livery of the former British European Airways (BEA), will take part in the flypast, one of the highlights of the Jersey show, which typically attracts more than 25,000 visitors.

The A319, registration G-EUPJ, has been painted to mark the anniversary and is one of four heritage aircraft with vintage liveries. A difference with the replica is it has a grey upper wing, rather than red, to meet current wing paint reflectivity rules.

On the ground, visitors will be welcomed by BA ambassadors in heritage uniforms, reflecting the airline’s long association with Jersey which began in 1933 when Jersey Airways launched a route from Portsmouth. Until Jersey Airport opened in March 1937, aircraft arriving on the island landed on St Aubin’s Bay beach.

BA airport manager Jersey Anne-Marie Ryan said: “We are delighted to take a role in the air display. It is particularly important this year to look back at our long and successful association and the part we have played in the island’s history.”
