Airport operators name new chair

Baroness Ruby McGregor-Smith has been appointed chair of the Airport Operators Association (AOA) in succession to Ed Anderson. She will take up the appointment from 1 September.

She is a portfolio non-executive director and advisory director with current positions that include Thames Tideway Tunnel, Mace Group and the Department for Education.

She is also chair of the Office for Tackling Injustices and a member of the Democracy and Digital Technologies Committee in the House of Lords, having been granted a life peerage in 2015.

Between 2007-16, Baroness McGregor-Smith was chief executive of MITIE Group, which she joined in 2002, and from 2012-2016 chaired the Women’s Business Council. In 2017, she was responsible for the independent report Race in the Workplace.

She said: “I am looking forward to joining the AOA, which is uniquely placed to influence the strategic direction of the sector and to capitalise on the opportunities and challenges ahead.

“Aviation has never been more important; as the UK leaves the EU, it will be one of the crucial facilitators and enablers of our future prosperity. Ensuring the framework is in place for UK airports to deliver on that potential requires a strong and leading trade association.”
