SIA brings out a 'super-app'

An advanced mobile app for Android and iOS smartphones was introduced by Singapore Airlines (SIA) last week claiming to deliver enhanced performance to improve transaction time by up to 60%.

The carrier said it had carried out a “ground-up rebuild” of the device with advanced underlying technical architecture offering “significant improvements” to previous functions and adding several new features.

These include a ‘Capture & Discover’ search function that uses image recognition as well as speech and natural language processing to identify the user intent, match it to an SIA destination, and present relevant destination content and fare deals.

There is also a new ‘Translation Assistant’ feature with real-time language translation by voice to help travellers communicate better when they are overseas and a ‘Measure Your Baggage’ function so passengers know if their luggage is within limits.

Among improvements in existing functionality is real-time information such as boarding gate numbers, a destination’s weather and currency and baggage belt details added to the “My Trips” function.

For Android users, the new app is being released by countries progressively between now and next month, while iOS users will be able to download it from the App Store in a few weeks’ time.
