Avis Budget pay-as-you-go

A new pay-per-kilometre low-cost self-serve mobility brand called Smile Rent has been launched by the Avis Budget Group in Italy as the latest addition to its expanding portfolio in southern Europe.

The company says the development allows customers to access rental vehicles via their phones, bypassing the rental desk completely. It is launching initially at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa airports this summer.

The keys will be inside the vehicles in dedicated parking spots near the airports, reachable via the airport shuttle services, and cars can be locked and unlocked via the app.

Customers pay for the number of kilometres covered during the rental and are claimed to have complete control of the rental process and can manage bookings, costs and modifications such as upgrades by smartphone 24hr a day.

Group international strategy director Katie Mille said: “This is an exciting step for us as we continue to look at ways to reinvent rental for the present and future needs of different customers and partners.

“Smile Rent represents a further step in the path taken by Avis Budget to generate innovative mobility solutions, making the rental experience simpler, more transparent and on-demand so customers manage the process with complete freedom and autonomy.”
