Wizz Air UK adds Russia routes

New daily services from Luton to Moscow and St Petersburg are being launched by Wizz Air UK on 1 October. It is the first time the airline has served Russia’s two largest cities from the UK.

It will also be another test of Russia’s visa system, which has caused difficulties in the past and is widely believed to have contributed to the withdrawal by the former BMI and easyJet of operations to Moscow.

If successful, the new flights will add to the momentum that has been built up by Wizz Air UK at Luton, where it says it has become the largest operator a year after launch, with a market share of more than 40%.

The airline says it currently has more than 8.5m seats on sale on its 61 Luton routes, representing 20% growth year on year. The Russian additions mean Wizz now offers 100 routes to 28 countries from 10 UK airports.

Wizz Air UK managing director Owain Jones said: “These are two of the most exciting routes so far in Wizz Air’s network, giving passengers the chance to travel from the UK to two of Russia’s greatest cities and avoid high legacy-airline prices.”
