Qantas eyes more US non-stops

More non-stop US destinations are in view for Qantas after the airline completes the launch of services between Brisbane and both Chicago and San Francisco next April, group CEO Alan Joyce said last week.

Brisbane – Chicago will have four flights a week initially and Brisbane – San Francisco three but Joyce added: “We’ll want to get to daily flights as fast as we can. That will be our first priority.”

After that, he said, Qantas, with more Boeing B787 Dreamliners on the way, was “very keen” on other destinations in the US. Once the existing routes were shown to be working, the carrier would be looking to further growth.

A key element in the plans is a proposed joint-venture agreement between Qantas and American Airlines, which is expected to be fully approved shortly. Joyce indicated if it went through, Seattle could be the next US point to join the Qantas network.

Another contender could be Dallas/Fort Worth, where American has a major presence, while further cooperation between Qantas and Alaska Airlines would be a factor in the plans for Seattle, a gateway to Alaska and the Alaska cruise market.
