American's wi-fi breakthrough

A first in inflight connectivity was claimed by American Airlines last week with the company saying it now offered passengers access to high-speed satellite wi-fi and live TV on more aircraft than any other carrier.

It followed completion by American of the installation of the advanced connectivity on its entire long-term mainline narrow-body fleet of more than 700 aircraft.

The airline noted satellite-based wi-fi allowed passengers to stream video without buffering or interruptions, upload and download files with ease and stay connected from gate to gate.

At the same time, upgraded bandwidth capacity ensured no compromise on connection quality or speed, even if every passenger chose to access inflight internet at the same time.

In addition, every satellite-equipped aircraft can now stream live TV, giving more passengers free access to 12 channels on their personal devices. American is already the only US airline to offer live TV on international flights.

Airline marketing senior vice-president Kurt Stache said: “Elevating the travel experience is one of our top goals. In less than two years, we completed broadband internet installation on our entire mainline fleet and will continue setting new standards to show our passengers we value the time they spend with us.”
