What are claimed to be the world's first basic Business Class fares have been launched by Emirates on selected routes and flights. The idea could be extended if the trial proves a success.
Passengers who book the special fare will receive the same inflight perks as those who pay the regular rate but will not have the same privileges on the ground such as lounge access and chauffeur service to the airport.
They are also not allowed to go through fast-track security lanes and cannot select seats before check-in. Loyalty programme customers will also earn fewer points and cannot upgrade to First Class using airmiles.
The Basic Business plan was first mooted by Emirates CEO Sir Tim Clark in an interview in 2017. "You'll get the business product in the air only, and that's it,” he told local media. “No chauffeur drive, no lounge, no expedited [security] search.”
According to surveys last week, few routes appear to have the fares so far but they are expected to be rolled out more widely soon. The Basic Business fare is about $157 cheaper than the cheapest regular business fare, which includes the perks on the ground.
