Southampton cut in emissions

A reduction in carbon footprint in the past 12 months of more than 970 tonnes of carbon dioxide – equivalent to flying an aircraft 210 times around the world – was claimed last week by Southampton Airport.

Officials said 2018 saw a 43% decrease in emissions despite a record 2m passengers over the past two years. This equals a 10.9% emission decrease per passenger, the energy used if each passenger watched TV for 56hr.

More than 90% of the lighting is LED, and the airport has seen a 6.9% decrease in electricity consumption. Southampton was the first UK airport to use LED lighting on aircraft stands and also has 11 car charging points at the short-stay car park.

The airport also sends 65% of its waste – more than 300 tonnes – to recycling, with the rest diverted from landfill to a special facility, where it is burnt to generate electricity.

Safety, health and environment manager Amy Le Vieux said: “Southampton Airport is committed to reducing our carbon footprint and growing sustainably and every year we work with an independent organisation to produce a carbon footprint report.

“We work actively on climate change by continuously looking for ways that can further reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout our processes and will aim to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.”
