Virgin in £3.2bn A330 purchase

A £3.2bn firm order for 14 Airbus A330-900neos, with an additional six as options, was announced by Virgin Atlantic last week in a move the airline said reaffirmed its commitment to flying “the cleanest, greenest fleet in the sky”.

Virgin said the new aircraft were designed to be 13% more fuel- and carbon-efficient than the A330-300 they replace and will deliver a significant reduction in airport noise contour.

It added that over the ten-year period from 2014-24, the fuel efficiency of Virgin Atlantic’s fleet will have improved by 32%, with the latest order, valued at US$4.1bn, a crucial step in its fleet transformation programme.

Of the A330-300 order, eight will be purchased and six leased as Virgin continues its investment into increasing the proportion of owned aircraft in its fleet. The new arrivals will be powered exclusively by the Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engine.

Airline CEO Shai Weiss said: “A fundamental part of our strategy as we strive to become the UK’s second flag carrier at an expanded Heathrow is collaboration and our announcement of the new order with Airbus and Rolls-Royce, following the launch of our A350-1000 this summer, takes our partnership to the next level.”
