Luggage tracker for IATA

BTN will be testing “Hanno the Navigator” a luggage tracker to and from Seoul later in the week.  Unfortunately editor in chief Malcolm Ginsberg is taking a direct Korean Air flight from Heathrow and so no connecting problems.

For over six years airlines and leading luggage manufacturers have been struggling to develop an advanced luggage tracker, the prohibition on lithium battery powered “smart” bags in late 2017 banning a number of suppliers making the situation looking  bleak for travellers.

“Hanno the Navigator” is the most advanced GPS, 2G/3G, Bluetooth, and wi-fi enabled precision tracking product, designed for tracking checked-in bags and other valuable assets.  Hanno is the white label version of the Versa tracker developed by the company of the same name in the Netherlands, with investment funding from KLM.

The tracker is linked to real time flight information systems.  At the airport the passenger can check to see the tracker moving between planes at the gate, being loaded/unloaded from the plane.  The passenger can follow the bag’s location via the mobile app.  But what is really important is that airlines can also see the bag’s location and take action to prevent it missing a flight or return it to the passenger swiftly in case it actually does miss the service.

The device was developed in cooperation with major airlines and has a patented automatic flight mode which makes it fully compliant with all aviation regulations (EASA and FAA approved).

Hi Edward. first of all we need to recognise that this is not a simple luggage tag but an active luggage tracker. Therefore the Hanno tracker will always provide near real-time location information, so you’ll never lose sight on your bag. Moreover it can provide airlines and Groundhandlers this information too in order to “rescue” a bag if it is at risk of missing its flight. The platform behind the tracker keeps track of disruptions of any kind and in case of reflighting the platform will know this and update the relevant information across the system.

While this looks like a nice and effective package I believe it fails to handle those inevitable situations when your itinerary changes, because of flight disruptions, delays, etc. In a situation where you either have to change itinerary voluntarily or involuntarily and the airline re-books you, (or you re-book yourself) wouldn't be nice if the tag automatically changed the destination shown on the tag? Such a tag would be the most effective way of managing those situations where most bags go astray. Stay tuned!
