Virgin heads for South America

Competition on the UK – South America network is set to soar next year with Virgin Atlantic, which is due to unveil its new Airbus A350 next week, launching a daily service between Heathrow and São Paulo.

The 11hr 55min flight will mark the first foray into South America by Virgin, which is planning initially to operate a Boeing B787 aircraft configured in its Upper Class, Premium and Economy Delight, Classic and Light cabins.

Virgin says with São Paulo the commercial capital of Brazil and one of the top 20 global economic cities, the service will aim to capitalise on the fast-growing Brazilian economy, which benefits from year-round transatlantic demand.

São Paulo is also the largest city in the Americas after New York for multinational companies to have offices, and Virgin says provides a platform for the airline to broaden its offering to existing corporate customers.

Executive vice-president – commercial Juha Jarvinen said: “This year marks the start of a new phase of growth for Virgin Atlantic as we work to become the most loved travel company.

“São Paulo represents an incredible opportunity for our business, and we’re very excited to be flying to a brand new continent for the first time.”
