£1bn 'Jewel' to open at Changi

One of the world’s top-ranking airports is boosting its award-winning facilities further with the £1bn opening at Singapore Changi on 17 April of what is described as a world-class multi-dimensional visitor destination.

Known as Jewel, the ten-storey complex has an area of 137,000sq m containing the world’s highest indoor waterfall, the Rain Vortex, and is housed under a glass and steel structure connected directly to Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

The development will also feature a four-storey Forest Valley containing thousands of trees and plants and one of the largest indoor collections of plants in Singapore. There are also more than 280 retail stores and places to eat (below), as well as a 130-room hotel.

Officials say Jewel has been designed as a multi-dimensional aviation-lifestyle destination that will contribute to strengthening Changi’s appeal as a hub for passengers on layovers as well as becoming an attraction for visitors and locals.

A second-phase opening this summer will see the topmost level of Jewel unveiled as an entertainment park with fairground-style attractions, gardens, walking trails and more dining outlets.

Changi Airport Group senior vice-president for corporate and marketing communications Ivan Tan said: “Jewel is set to be a destination like no other, a new dimension to the travel and leisure experience of our visitors”.
