Jet2 fleet reaches 100

Consolidating its position as the UK’s third largest airline, Jet2.com and its leisure arm Jet2holidays last week took formal delivery of the last of 34 new Next Generation Boeing B737-800s, taking the number of aircraft in the fleet to 100.

The 189-seater was handed over at a ceremony (below) at Boeing’s delivery centre in Seattle before flying to the UK for finishing touches, including bespoke seating. It will begin operations in the next few weeks.

Jet2.com and Jet2holidays CEO Steve Heapy said the new fleet, built up since September 2016, would enable the companies to continue their growth and development strategy to fly more passengers across Europe, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

Jet2’s flight-only product drew 5.37m passengers in the financial year to 31 March 2018), 48% up year-on-year, while demand for ATOL-protected package holidays continued to grow with Jet2holidays carrying 2.5m passengers, 45% up.

Heapy said the growth is set to continue, with more than 12m seats and three new destinations – Chania (Crete), Bourgas (Bulgaria) and Izmir (Turkey) – on sale for this summer from across nine UK bases, a capacity increase of 15%.
