TUI: Inflight films preferred to boxsets

Despite the growing popularity of the ‘boxset binge’, when it comes to settling in and switching off during a flight the likes of a Game of Thrones marathon is being overlooked in favour of a good film, research by holiday company TUI has revealed.

TUI says the findings show ‘"well-established" in-flight services are still favoured by passengers yet consumers are surrounded by more choice than ever when it comes to entertainment content.

During short, mid- and long-haul flights, on average more than 79% of passengers felt it was more important a selection of films rather than boxsets were available for the journey. Only 48% of participants said boxsets were essential.

Along with film content, passengers also said they enjoyed long-established in-flight services such as gate-to-gate connectivity (62%) and flight progress updates (80%). In terms of what to watch, rom-coms and old sit coms were popular choices.

This news comes as TUI Airways prepares to launch its on-board streaming service, "Navigate", enabling passengers to use their own electronic devices to watch the latest entertainment content as well as plan their trips from their seats.

The system trial will launch this winter across the first of the Boeing B737 MAX aircraft due to join the TUI Airways fleet (BTN last week).
