Success by airlines in contributing to cutting noise and emissions around Heathrow were hailed by the airport last week in the latest quarterly update from its “Fly Quiet and Green” initiative.
The airport singled out Oman Air for its investment in modernising its Heathrow fleet, saying the programme had paid off with the airline making “an impressive leap forward” in the results. Country manager UK Kelpesh Patel said it was “a great achievement”.
Officials noted Oman Air was now second to Polish carrier LOT in the league table, which ranked the top 50 busiest airlines at Heathrow on seven noise and emission metrics between July and September this year.
“Over the past quarter, Oman Air has phased out the use of its older A330s on its Heathrow routes for Boeing B787 Dreamliners – among the quietest and most environmentally-friendly aircraft on the market today,” the airport said.
“As a result, the airline has jumped an astounding 26 places over the last quarter – showing the impact technology can have on an airline’s environmental performance.”
The report said LOT, which operates a new Boeing B737 MAX on its Heathrow – Warsaw services, was another top performer, with the latest results crowning the airline pole position in environmental performance for the quarter.
Honourable mentions in the report went to Aer Lingus and Air Malta.
