Brunei builds on London success

More regional expansion was announced last week by Royal Brunei Airlines as part of its programme to open up the business opportunities in Borneo and its wider area to the UK market.

The carrier is restarting services between Brunei and Kuching, capital of Malaysian Sarawak, from 28 December using an Airbus A320, with two flights a week increasing to four from 3 February next year.

The announcement comes as Royal Brunei celebrates the successful launch of its daily non-stop Heathrow – Brunei service (BTN 24 September). The 13hr flight by Boeing B787 Dreamliner marks the first time the two countries have had a direct air link.

Importantly, the service also enables Royal Brunei to offer a one-stop operation to Melbourne, a development hailed by CEO Karam Chand as particularly significant for the business-travel market.

Speaking in London, he said: “Our daily evening departures from Heathrow are timed to allow guests to maximise time in the destination with an afternoon/evening arrival. Passengers for Melbourne then have just a 7hr flight from Brunei with an early-morning arrival."

UK/Ireland country manager Adiel Mambara added: “Our London – Melbourne one-stop makes us a major player in the UK – Australia market. The Melbourne – Brunei – Heathrow flight is also the shortest possible route.”
