AOA honours award winners

Birmingham, East Midlands and Southend airports took top honours at the AOA conference annual awards last week as the association saluted them as the best of the year.

Birmingham was named best in the 10m-plus passenger category, East Midlands in the rankings for those with between 3m-10m passengers and Southend took the trophy for those with under 3m passengers.

Carlisle Lake District was named best general aviation airport with the judges saying it was a valuable tourist facility with commercial and business passenger flights to major centres planned for next spring.

Cardiff was judged to have run the best campaign for the AOA UK 2018 Airports Safety Week. Judges said the facility ran “an excellent and well-thought-through campaign that delivered a solid programme of events”.

Commended in the category was George Best Belfast City Airport for what the AOA said was “a vibrant series of events that included excellent engagement with other airports and the local community”.

Among other awards, Wilson James won the Best Environmental Initiative title for demonstrating delivery in line with Heathrow’s 2.0 targets with “tangible and measurable outcomes and benefits and a clear and demonstrable commitment to continuous improvement."

Commended in this category was Gatwick for achieving zero waste-to-landfill, as the first airport in the world to do so.
